Overview

Phnom Penh is a compelling city that acts as a gateway to Cambodia's spiritual past, royal history, and tranquil countryside.

Here are the most popular tours and excursions covering the city and its surrounding areas:

Phnom Penh City & History Tours

These tours typically cover the city's essential landmarks and historical sites, often done by Tuk-Tuk or air-conditioned van.

  • S-21 Genocide Museum & The Killing Fields (Choeung Ek): The most crucial historical tours, offering a sobering and essential look at the Khmer Rouge regime's tragic legacy. This is often a half-day or combined full-day tour with other city sights.

  • Royal Grand Tour: Visit the Royal Palace and the adjacent Silver Pagoda (a stunning Buddhist temple), the National Museum of Cambodia (housing ancient Khmer artifacts), and the city's spiritual heart, Wat Phnom.

  • Mekong River Cruises: Evening cruises on the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers are very popular, offering beautiful sunset views of the city skyline, often with dinner and drinks included.

  • Food & Market Tours: Guided excursions to local markets (like the Central Market or Russian Market) and street food hotspots, often done by Tuk-Tuk, to experience the city's culinary scene.

Surrounding Area Day Trips

These excursions take you just outside the city to explore rural life and ancient ruins:

  • Oudong Mountain: A popular day trip to the former royal capital of Cambodia (17th to 19th century). Visitors climb the hill dotted with stupas for panoramic views of the countryside and a look at important religious relics.

  • Silk Island (Koh Dach): A short boat ride across the Mekong to a tranquil island known for its traditional silk weaving and farming. Tours often include cycling through the villages and visiting local workshops.

  • Phnom Chisor & Tonle Bati: A longer day trip to the south. Phnom Chisor is a hilltop temple dating back to the 11th century with an impressive view, and Tonle Bati is a nearby lake popular with locals, featuring two small Angkorian-era temples.

  • Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center: A sanctuary for rescued animals, offering an ethical way to see Cambodia's wildlife, including tigers, elephants, and sun bears.
